Australian football is remembering former St Kilda captain, Richmond coach, and beloved media personality Danny “Spud” Frawley, whose death in a tragic car crash in 2019 left the AFL community devastated.
Frawley, whose full name was Daniel Patrick Frawley, was born on September 8, 1963, in Ballarat, Victoria. He became one of the most recognizable figures in Australian rules football, enjoying a distinguished playing career with St Kilda before moving into coaching, administration, and broadcasting.
Frawley played 240 VFL/AFL games for St Kilda between 1984 and 1995 and captained the club for nine seasons. He was named All-Australian in 1988 and won St Kilda’s best and fairest award that same year. He later coached Richmond from 2000 to 2004 and became a popular commentator and television personality.
Away from football, Frawley was widely admired for his humor, warmth, generosity, and willingness to speak openly about mental health. He became an advocate for mental-health awareness and used his public profile to encourage people to seek support during difficult periods.
Danny Frawley died on September 9, 2019, one day after his 56th birthday, following a single-vehicle crash near Millbrook, east of Ballarat. His vehicle left the road and struck a tree, and he died at the scene.
A subsequent Victorian coronial investigation examined the circumstances surrounding his death and his mental health in the period before the crash. The coroner found that Frawley had been experiencing depression and noted that chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, could potentially have contributed to his mental-health difficulties, although the available evidence could not establish how much the condition contributed to his death.
Frawley’s death prompted an enormous response throughout Australian football. Former teammates, opponents, coaches, broadcasters, and supporters remembered him as a larger-than-life character whose influence extended well beyond his achievements on the football field.
