The Richmond, Virginia, community is mourning the death of Christopher Draughn, 41, whose body was discovered Wednesday morning during a death investigation near Carytown.
Richmond Police identified Draughn, a Richmond resident, as the victim after officers responded to a report of a person down at approximately 5:31 a.m. on the 3400 block of Parkwood Avenue, about one block south of Cary Street.
According to Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards, officers found Draughn lying in the street surrounded by blood and showing signs of trauma. Emergency responders and investigators were subsequently called to the scene as authorities began working to determine what happened.
Police Investigation Near Carytown
Investigators developed information indicating that a possible person of interest had entered a nearby residence on the same block. Police cordoned off the area and urged residents to avoid the neighborhood while officers worked to secure the scene.
Authorities began negotiations with people inside the home, using loudspeakers to ask occupants to come outside. During the negotiations, officers obtained a search warrant for the residence.
Members of the Richmond Police Department’s SWAT team executed the warrant at approximately 8:30 a.m.
Chief Edwards later addressed reports of loud noises heard during the operation, explaining that three loud bangs were caused by light-sound distraction devices used by the SWAT team when entering potentially dangerous situations.
Police confirmed that no shots were fired by officers or anyone else during the operation.
Woman Taken Into Custody
Once officers entered the residence, a woman was taken into custody and interviewed by detectives.
Investigators believe Draughn had been inside the residence at some point and that the people involved knew one another, according to police.
Authorities know the identity of the woman who was taken into custody, but officials had not released additional information about her background. No charges had been announced as of Wednesday morning.
Police emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages and that the circumstances surrounding Draughn’s death have not yet been fully established.
Community Not Considered at Ongoing Risk
Despite the police activity and SWAT operation, authorities said there was no ongoing threat to the wider community.
Residents had been asked to avoid the area while investigators processed the scene and conducted their search. The neighborhood was subsequently expected to return to normal as the investigation continued.
Draughn’s death has left family members, friends, and members of the Richmond community searching for answers. As investigators work to establish the events leading up to his death, those who knew him are left to remember his life and mourn his sudden loss.
